Job Description
Summary

Serves as a leader for utility work done in the field, including operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of water equipment and services. Manages the maintenance of all aspects of the water distribution and storage systems for the city.
 

Essential & Ancillary Job Duties

Essential Job Duties

  • Lead crew in the daily operations of all aspects of the water supply and distribution systems, including maintenance, repair, and installation.
  • Oversee the safe use of heavy equipment, effective trench safety procedures, and traffic control during all operations.
  • Conduct emergency services as needed and follow all emergency safety protocol.
  • Participate in all testing and reporting methods and techniques designated by the Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Manage inventory in a fiscally responsible manner that conforms to all department purchasing policies.
  • Facilitate all water services programs, including Cross-Connection Protection, Meter Maintenance, and Fire Hydrant Flushing and Safety.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Assume the duties of the Supervisor Water Supply & Distribution in his/her absence.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Job Qualifications
Education, experience and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered. Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in water distribution systems required.
  • 2 or more years of field and leadership experience and/or 30 semester hours of management or vocational coursework preferred
  • Current Class B CDL with air brake endorsement required or ability to obtain within 120 days of employment.
  • DS III Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Drinking Water Treatment D Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Work Zone Safety Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.
  • Chemical Spill Response Certification and ability to refresh every three years.
  • Preferred certifications include: ASSE or ABPA Backflow, Factory and Local HDPE, LCD Electro-fusion

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills and abilities commonly associated with this position.

  • Knowledge of Missouri DNR and EPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of HDPE pipes and fittings.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and basic office equipment/machines.
  • Clear verbal communication skills and ability to give and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and make responsible decisions.
  • Ability to use good judgment and think quickly and rationally in difficult or stressful situations.

Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the duties of this job.

• Varying weather conditions.
• Working near moving mechanical parts.
• Occasionally exposed to potentially hazardous materials and dangerous job sites.
• Exposed to loud noises, mostly from job site equipment.
